How to troubleshoot a check engine light on a Kia Niro?

I recently purchased a used Kia Niro and the check engine light has turned on. I'm not sure what the issue could be and I don't want to pay a lot of money for repairs. Can anyone help me troubleshoot this issue?

The check engine light could be triggered by a number of issues, from a loose gas cap to a faulty oxygen sensor. I recommend taking your car to a reputable mechanic to have it diagnosed. Make sure to get a quote before any repairs are done.

First, try tightening the gas cap. If that doesn't solve the issue, you can purchase an OBD-II scanner and check the error code yourself. However, for a more accurate diagnosis, it's best to take it to a mechanic.

If you're comfortable with DIY repairs, you can also try resetting the check engine light by disconnecting the negative battery cable for a few minutes. But it's important to have the issue properly diagnosed to avoid any potential safety hazards.
